INTRODUCTION

Though many professing Christians today claim to have the Biblical gift of speaking in tongues, their practice has no sound undergirding in the Word of God, since tongues ceased in the 1st Century, according to the Bible.

Bible doctrine – in line with the Scripture – is critical in the believer’s walk of faith in Christ. This Biblical article shall demonstrate the following: The Bible sign gift of tongues has ceased. The Bible alone – including the English text of the Bible and it’s underlying Greek text – will be the final source of authority for such proof herein.

Indeed, it is imperative for the Christian to study and commit to memory the doctrines of the Bible. It is impossible to serve God “in spirit and in truth,” according to John 4:24, without the practice of pure Bible teaching. To their detriment, many refuse to talk about doctrine or will not patiently consider the details of doctrine in the Scripture. It is this writer’s prayer that all who consider the following presentation will not resist the plain teaching of God’s Word.

Through a right study of the Bible passages concerning tongues and the meaning of the words in these Bible passages, the correct understanding of God’s teaching on tongues is established. Proper study must include exegesis, which is the drawing out – in light of historical and grammatical evidence – the meaning of the Scripture text that is actually written there.” It also includes proper interpretation through exposition. Exposition is taking just the Scripture text and setting forth the meaning of the passage in line with the context of the book it is in and the Bible as a whole.
